Domestic violence activists want you to boycott Fifty Shades
Activists are urging people to boycott the Fifty Shades of Grey film and donate to domestic violence shelters rather than spend their money on seeing it in cinemas.

The new campaign #50dollarsnot50shades is supported by American and Canadian organisations [...] The groups argue the film romanticises abusive relationships and sexual violence.

“Fifty Shades” makes “violence sexy” but doesn’t capture the grave dangers and consequences that can occur in real-life controlling, abusive relationships, said the National Center on Sexual Exploitation and its allies, London Abused Women’s Center. [..]

Other alarming themes in the book are coercion, humiliation, degradation, stalking, isolation, manipulation, physical torture, intimidation, possessiveness, jealousy and emotional and physical abuse, they said.

Sexual taste is a personal thing and I’m not here to shame consensual BDSM. [...]

But it’s what Christian does outside of the bedroom that have caused many who’ve experienced abuse to call for the movie to be boycotted, with the cost of a cinema ticket being donated to an abuse charity instead.

[...] Fifty Shades perpetuates the myth that abusers can’t help their actions and that if the right person loves them the right way, they’ll become magically “cured.” This is not only a lie, but a dangerous one. How many people stay in toxic relationships, hoping their abuser will change? I did.
