Too many kids watch TV rather than play outside

WRAPPING kids in cotton wool and cocooning them in bedrooms stuffed with electrical gadgets is the disastrous legacy left by today’s terrified parents.

A quarter of today’s eight to ten-year-olds have never played outside unsupervised, and others are denied childhood freedoms taken for granted by older generations, according to White Dot, the international campaign against television.

White Dot believes that parents are succumbing to ‘mean world syndrome’, whereby television convinces viewers that the world is more dangerous than it actually is.

Its British director, David Burke, said: “People are finally waking up to this. Children stuck in front of the TV in their bedrooms is the shabby secret of modern parenting.”
