Yucky Spam

Post by jlotus » Sat Apr 07, 2007 12:06 pm

Hey White Dot BB users,

Sorry about the porn spams and other yucky junk mail that's been clogging up the boards. Robots put it on here and I have to delete it manually. Please try to ignore it.. if you possibly can.

Spam-bots

Post by TerryS » Sun Apr 08, 2007 6:58 am

Hi Jean

What a drag for you !!

I know it would be a shame not to allow
commenting by guests. But perhaps it would
be worthwhile to only allow commenting by
registered users at least for a little while,
until the spam-bots went away.

Just a thought...

spam senders

Post by boeina » Sun Apr 08, 2007 10:21 am

White dotters,

Seen the spam there maybe IS a modern alternative. I use the virtual friends network hyves in the netherlands. The same there is freindster and maybe all white dotters can become friends at friendster. The possibillety for mail actions are better there.

regards,

Boeina :D

Again, So sorry about the yucky spam. We're attempting to change to blog software, so we can have more filtering.

Anti-Spam

Post by TerryS » Mon Jul 02, 2007 1:25 am

Hi Jean

It seems like most forums are having the same
spam problem. A while ago I had gone online to
see what solutions there were, and there are some
but they looked like a lot of work.

I had thought that requiring the message poster
to type in the letters and numbers shown in a
graphic would do the trick, but it seems the
spam bots can even get around those using OCR
technology.

This time I did find this site:

http://www.eamped.com/

It's a free phpBB hosting site and they claim
to provide anti-spam protection. Also they can
"import most phpBB databases from other hosts".

Hope that helps, otherwise these tips might help:

Can we move this bulletin board to run away from spam??

Post by jlotus » Wed Jan 09, 2008 3:54 pm

Terry

Could you resend the link for the spam-filtering bulletin board?

www.eamped.com doesn't work.

We want to stop the spam, but I'm hesitant to lose all of the great posts from White Dotters on this forum.

Hi Jean

It looks like www.eamped.com is down, so
it's just as well you didn't take my advise
to move over!

I think it would be possible to move all the
info from here to another forum (as long as
the new forum was the same version of phpBB),
but it would be a major hassle.

Plus it seems (from my limited browsing)
like all the forums are having spam problems.

I went to the support forum for mfbb and looked
for anti-spam info. There wasn't much, but they
did mention putting in a spam-prevention mod.

According to Admin, this mod "will prevent anyone
with less than 10 posts from posting if the post
contains a link." and the number of posting is
adjustable.

I posted a question yesterday, asking if this
mod was still active, but there has been no reply.

Googling around, I came across a similar discussion
here:

http://support.createforum.net/support-about506.html

It seems like this mod doesn't work with certain "skins"
so that might be an issue too.

Ideally, I think it would be easier to stay here
IF you can get some support to solve the spam problem.

But if mfbb is not interesting in helping then I would
certainly be happy to help out in migrating this
board to another site.

cheers, and THANK YOU for all your hard work running
this unique board.

Terry

Spam Request

Post by TerryS » Tue Jan 29, 2008 4:54 am

Hi Jean

I got an answer to my question from Admin here:

http://support.myfreebulletinboard.com/ ... =9855#9855

Basically he said he couldn't find any spam here.

So if you could leave the spam for a few days,
hopefully that will prove that there really
is a spam problem that needs to be solved.

Thanks,

Terry
